We're Hiring! A Marketer to Build Our Organic Search (SEO) Strategy

We're starting the search for a marketer who can help us build and execute our organic search (SEO) strategy. This isn't your typical SEO consulting opportunity—please read on to understand the specifics of our scenario.

Outseta is an 8-year old SaaS company that's invested heavily in "content" since the day we started. That said, we've always considered our content to be an investment in our "brand" morso than an investment in SEO. As a result, we've built a small but highly engaged audience—that we're exceedingly protective of. We're not willing to sacrifice the trust and credibility that we've built with our existing audience by diluting the quality of the content that we proactively share with them.

While that's the case, I recognize that there's an opportunity to bring a lot more highly qualified organic search traffic to our website. Today, almost all of our traffic, free trials, and customers enter our website via our home page. I see an opportunity to significantly diversify the number of entry paths to our website by focusing more explicitly on growing organic search traffic.

The good news is—relative to other many other companies—this should be a relatively easy task where gains can be made fairly quickly. We have a strong Domain Ranking (74, reported by Ahrefs) and organic traffic is steadily growing despite very little deliberate effort to grow it.

Your job is to develop a strategy to accelerate the growth of highly qualified, organic traffic—traffic that results in paying customers. This is the only KPI that we care about and ultimately how your success will be measured.

Job Responsibilities

We hire great people and get out of their way—we're looking for someone to steer our organic search ship.

  • Keyword research—We are particularly focused on "membership" related keywords, but there's a slew of other highly relevant (and often competitive) keywords related to our business. Help us assess the opportunities and choose which battles we'll fight.
  • Technical SEO—Help us optimize the technical architecture of our website. My sense is this is in a pretty good place already, but we're always looking for areas to improve.
  • Content + Link Building Strategy—Help us develop and execute on a content strategy specifically designed to help us grow organic traffic—that doesn't conflict with or dilute the relationship that we already have with our existing audience.

We have strong measurement systems already in place; and again we care deeply about the brand implications that SEO work too often involves. If your ideas center around producing large volumes of AI written content or programatic SEO, this is not the position for you.

Compensation

This is a part-time, contract position to start that will pay between $1,000-$3,000 per month based on an agreed upon scope. Compensation will be reviewed every 90 days based on performance.

The Opportunity

A few final notes that I think are important in understanding this opportunity.

  • You will work directly with me (Geoff). I am a marketer and have built customer acquisition engines on the back of SEO, targeting highly competitive keywords before. I know the pace at which SEO moves, what you're being tasked with, and will be appropriately patient. You'll be working with someone who understands and values marketing.
  • You'll have direct access to top writing and design talent—executional resources are at your fingertips; you just need to direct them.
  • You'll be working with a strong domain, and a site that's focused very little on SEO to date—we've already spent years building our domain authority. We have not been deliberate in targeting keywords.
  • You will not be assessed on hours logged, content published, or traffic sent to our site—we're looking for organic traffic that results in customer sign-ups. That's it.
  • I'm thinking we start with bi-weekly meetings; otherwise your work will be async.
  • I would like to see movement in the right direction after 90 days—and demonstrated growth in customers signing up via organic search after 180 days. If you grow our business, your compensation will grow alongside it. Exceptional performance will lead to an opportunity to join our team if desired.
